LoRaWAN CO2 sensor for indoor air quality and building management systems

In buildings, CO₂ concentration is a practical indicator of how well occupied spaces are ventilated. Combined with temperature and humidity, it gives a clearer picture of indoor conditions and helps identify rooms that need attention.

VISTA RISE brings these three measurements together in a 3-in-1 LoRaWAN environmental sensor. The data is transmitted wirelessly and can be centralised in a monitoring platform or integrated into the Building Management System (BMS), for example as BACnet points via a compatible gateway.

This information helps control heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) so that systems respond to actual conditions in the building, supporting both indoor air quality and energy efficiency.

Monitor CO2 at a glance with a traffic-light indicator

VISTA RISE measures carbon dioxide every 5 minutes and alerts occupants visually to changes in indoor air quality.

Its green, amber and red indicator light makes it easy to see when a room needs fresh air, helping to build good ventilation habits in offices, meeting rooms, classrooms and other shared spaces.

In the UK, HSE guidance states that CO₂ levels consistently above 1,500 ppm in an occupied room indicate poor ventilation, and BB101 sets CO₂ criteria for teaching spaces in schools in England. VISTA RISE helps you monitor CO₂ against these benchmarks; on its own, it does not demonstrate compliance with building or ventilation requirements.

Indicator light

The Green / Orange / Red indicator changes with the CO2 level and alerts you when it's time to ventilate to renew the indoor air.

CO2 monitoring for indoor air quality

CO2 readings help identify when ventilation may need attention. CO2 is an indicator of ventilation conditions, rather than a measurement of every indoor air pollutant. Measurement intervals depend on the configured settings.

CO2 measurement and calibration

CO2 readings support the assessment of indoor ventilation conditions. Follow the product documentation for calibration procedures and measurement settings; measurement performance does not establish compliance with local building requirements.

CO2 monitoring for ventilation decisions

Direct CO2 readings help inform ventilation decisions. Product measurement capabilities do not by themselves establish compliance with UK or Irish building or ventilation requirements; assess the complete installation and applicable local guidance.

Three measurements to understand indoor conditions

VISTA RISE combines CO₂, temperature and humidity measurement in a single 3-in-1 LoRaWAN sensor.

Together, this data lets you track air exchange, monitor thermal comfort and better understand indoor conditions in commercial buildings, schools and multi-occupancy housing.

L2D1: direct device-to-device wireless communication between Nexelec products

VISTA RISE incorporates Nexelec’s L2D1 radio protocol, which enables direct, device-to-device (D2D) local communication between compatible products.

This link works independently of the LoRaWAN infrastructure and needs no gateway for local communication between paired devices.

VISTA RISE therefore offers two communication options: L2D1 for direct exchanges between compatible devices, and LoRaWAN for remote data collection.

Direct local communication

VISTA RISE communicates directly with compatible Nexelec devices (device-to-device)

Local L2D1 link without a gateway

The local L2D1 link communicates directly with compatible Nexelec devices. Remote LoRaWAN monitoring and BMS integration require the appropriate network infrastructure and a compatible gateway.

Without a LoRaWAN network

L2D1 communications remain available locally, without going through the LoRaWAN network

FUOTA V2 remote firmware updates – no site visit needed

VISTA RISE can receive remote firmware updates over the LoRaWAN network using FUOTA V2 (Firmware Update Over The Air), a mechanism standardised by the LoRa Alliance. Your installed base can benefit from fixes, improvements and new features without routine site visits.

With cyber threats targeting connected devices on the rise, firmware updates play a critical role in smart building cybersecurity. FUOTA V2 makes it possible to deploy security patches remotely, remediate potential vulnerabilities and keep devices up to date throughout their service life.

Based on an open standard, FUOTA V2 works with the many LoRaWAN infrastructures and solutions on the market that support it, with no lock-in to a proprietary ecosystem.

Remote updates help strengthen IoT device security, extend the operational life of VISTA RISE and simplify maintenance of large-scale deployments.

Firmware improvements

Supported firmware fixes and improvements can be deployed through FUOTA V2 when updates are made available.

Open standard

FUOTA V2 follows a LoRa Alliance specification. Remote firmware updates require compatible LoRaWAN infrastructure that supports FUOTA V2.

Simplified maintenance

Remote firmware updates over compatible LoRaWAN infrastructure help minimise on-site maintenance visits.

A connected CO2 sensor for building management systems (BMS/BACnet)

VISTA RISE is a 3-in-1 LoRaWAN CO2 sensor that measures carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and humidity. Using LoRaWAN wireless communication, it collects this data remotely for integration into a Building Management System (BMS).

Paired with a compatible LoRaWAN-to-BACnet gateway such as Nexelec MASTER PRO or MASTER CORE, the measurements can be converted into BACnet/IP points and used by controllers and building management systems.

This supports centralised control of building services, in particular to adjust ventilation, heating and air conditioning to indoor conditions – for example increasing the fresh-air supply when CO₂ levels rise.

VISTA RISE makes it easy to add large numbers of measurement points without additional communication cabling. NFC configuration, FUOTA V2 updates and up to 10 years* of battery life make large-scale sensor networks straightforward to install and maintain.

If you also need occupancy and light level data, VISTA WAVE adds PIR presence detection and light measurement to CO₂, temperature and humidity in a 5-in-1 LoRaWAN sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our experts answer your questions

VISTA RISE by Nexelec is a 3-in-1 LoRaWAN CO2 sensor for smart buildings. It measures carbon dioxide (CO₂, 0–5,000 ppm), temperature and relative humidity, and its green, amber and red indicator light shows occupants when a room needs ventilating.

Its data is sent over LoRaWAN for remote monitoring or integration into a building management system (BMS). VISTA RISE runs for up to 10 years on a replaceable CR123 lithium battery, operates on the EU868 LoRaWAN frequency plan used in the UK and Ireland, and is CE and UKCA marked.

VISTA RISE measures three parameters:

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂): 0 to 5,000 ppm, accuracy ±(50 ppm + 3 % of reading), measured every 5 minutes
  • Temperature: -30 °C to +70 °C, accuracy ±0.2 °C
  • Relative humidity: 0 to 100 % RH, accuracy ±2 % RH

In the UK, HSE guidance states that CO₂ levels consistently higher than 1,500 ppm in an occupied room indicate poor ventilation and that action should be taken to improve it. As a reference point, about 1,000 ppm corresponds to roughly 10 litres of fresh air per second per person. For schools in England, BB101 sets CO₂ criteria for teaching spaces, such as a daily average below 1,500 ppm in naturally ventilated classrooms.

VISTA RISE measures CO₂ from 0 to 5,000 ppm, so rooms can be monitored against these benchmarks. CO₂ is an indicator of ventilation rather than a measure of every indoor air pollutant, and the sensor alone does not demonstrate compliance with building or ventilation requirements.

The VISTA RISE indicator light changes colour with the measured CO₂ level: green when the air is being renewed well, amber when ventilation should be considered, and red when it is time to ventilate the room. Indicator light settings can be adjusted by NFC from a smartphone to suit the building.

Yes. VISTA RISE (references X450LS in white and X450LS_BCK in black) uses the EU868 LoRaWAN frequency plan (863–870 MHz), which is the plan used for LoRaWAN in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It can connect to a private LoRaWAN gateway installed on site or to a LoRaWAN network that covers the building.

The sensor is CE and UKCA marked.

Yes. VISTA RISE transmits its measurements over LoRaWAN. Through a compatible infrastructure – such as a Nexelec MASTER PRO or MASTER CORE LoRaWAN-to-BACnet gateway – the data can be integrated into the BMS as BACnet/IP points to support the monitoring and control of ventilation, heating and air conditioning.

The data can also be used in the NAVIXIS platform, which provides an API and webhooks for third-party systems.

A standalone CO₂ monitor only shows its reading in the room. A LoRaWAN CO2 sensor such as VISTA RISE also shows a local traffic-light indication, but sends its measurements wirelessly so that CO₂, temperature and humidity can be centralised for every room, stored as history, used for threshold alerts and passed to the building management system.

LoRaWAN is designed for long range and very low power: its signal reaches through walls and floors, sensors do not need to join the building’s Wi-Fi network, and VISTA RISE can run for up to 10 years on one battery.

No. VISTA RISE runs on a lithium battery and communicates wirelessly over LoRaWAN, so no power or communication cabling is needed at the sensor. A LoRaWAN infrastructure (gateway and network server) is required to collect its data remotely.

VISTA RISE is wall-mounted with screws and wall plugs or with the supplied adhesive pad. Its lockable base with anti-theft screws and its tamper detection keep the installation secure. An instant measurement, triggered when the sensor is clipped onto its base, lets you check straight away that it is working.

VISTA RISE is powered by one replaceable CR123 lithium battery and can run for up to 10 years. Actual battery life depends on the settings (measurement and transmission intervals), network conditions and use; it is not guaranteed.

The L2D1 (Link to Device) radio link is a wireless communication technology that lets two compatible Nexelec devices communicate directly with each other, without a gateway or a LoRaWAN network.

It enables local, device-to-device (D2D) data exchange, in particular to simplify how devices are paired and operate together within a connected building.

This technology provides direct communication with a long radio range, which simplifies installation and reduces dependence on the network infrastructure.

Yes. VISTA RISE supports FUOTA V2 (Firmware Update Over The Air), a mechanism standardised by the LoRa Alliance. When updates are made available, fixes, security patches and improvements can be deployed remotely over a compatible LoRaWAN infrastructure, without visiting each sensor.

VISTA RISE measures CO2, temperature and humidity. VISTA WAVE adds PIR presence and light level measurement, making it a 5-in-1 indoor environmental sensor. Both support remote data collection over LoRaWAN. BMS integration requires a compatible gateway and an appropriate system integration.
