Technical information

VISTA SPACE: a LoRaWAN occupancy sensor for buildings

VISTA SPACE is a LoRaWAN occupancy sensor for offices, meeting rooms, schools, hotels and shared indoor spaces. It combines two complementary functions: motion detection and light level measurement.

For UK commercial buildings and retrofit projects, facilities managers and systems integrators can use these inputs to understand periods of activity in rooms and inform lighting strategies. Monitoring and control functions depend on the infrastructure, platform and equipment installed.

A LoRaWAN motion sensor with detection up to 6 metres

The LoRaWAN motion sensor in VISTA SPACE uses passive infrared (PIR) technology. Its detection range extends up to 6 metres, with a 120° angle vertically and horizontally.

Motion events indicate activity within the covered area. They can supply inputs for space monitoring or operating scenarios configured in the building management system.

A LoRaWAN motion sensor does not provide an exact occupant count. A stationary person may not be detected: interpret PIR events with this limitation and sensor placement in mind.

A LoRaWAN light sensor for lighting strategies

The integrated LoRaWAN light sensor measures ambient light from 0 to 5,000 lux, with a resolution of 5 lux and a stated accuracy of ±5 lux. Light readings complement motion events when reviewing conditions in a room.

A compatible control system can use light levels and detected activity to adapt lighting scenarios to daylight and room use. Thresholds, delays and commands are configured in that installation.

VISTA SPACE supplies detection events and measurements. It does not directly switch the electrical supply to luminaires or replace lighting control equipment.

A wireless occupancy sensor for existing buildings

VISTA SPACE is a wireless occupancy sensor powered by one replaceable CR123 lithium battery. It avoids the need to run a power or data cable to each sensor, supporting retrofit projects and installations across multiple rooms.

The sensor can be freestanding or wall-mounted using screws and wall plugs or a suitable adhesive fixing. A lockable base with an anti-theft screw and tamper detection help protect the installation.

Before deploying a wireless occupancy sensor, check radio coverage and the detection area at each location. Orientation and obstacles affect actual coverage.

An occupancy sensor for BMS integration

As an occupancy sensor for BMS applications, VISTA SPACE transmits motion events and light levels over LoRaWAN. Integration with a Building Management System requires suitable interfaces and infrastructure.

A compatible LoRaWAN-to-BACnet gateway, such as MASTER PRO, allows data from compatible sensors to be used as BACnet/IP points. Automation and equipment commands are then managed by the BMS.

Remote monitoring requires compatible LoRaWAN infrastructure including a gateway, network server and application platform. Any energy savings depend on the building and how the data is used; the sensor alone does not guarantee them.

L2D1: local radio between compatible devices

VISTA SPACE supports NEXELEC’s L2D1 protocol for direct exchanges between compatible devices without a gateway or LoRaWAN network for that local link.

Local communication is separate from LoRaWAN remote monitoring. The devices that can be paired and the functions available depend on their compatibility.

NFC commissioning and FUOTA V2 updates

Local configuration uses NFC on a compatible smartphone with the NEXELEC TOUCH app. A LoRaWAN connection is not needed for this configuration step.

FUOTA V2 firmware updates allow fixes and improvements to be deployed remotely through LoRaWAN infrastructure that supports this function. They reduce the need to visit devices to update their software.

Up to 10 years of battery life on a CR123 battery

VISTA SPACE offers up to 10 years of battery life using one replaceable CR123 lithium battery. Battery life depends on settings and operating conditions and is not guaranteed.

Include battery replacement in the maintenance plan, particularly for installations spread across multiple floors or buildings.

Which VISTA sensor suits your project?

VISTA SPACE measures light levels and detects movement. To add temperature and humidity, explore VISTA MOVE. For these four functions plus CO2 measurement, see VISTA WAVE.

For projects focused on indoor thermal comfort, VISTA FEEL measures temperature and humidity. VISTA RISE adds CO2 measurement without presence detection.

VISTA SPACE: frequently asked questions

What does VISTA SPACE measure?

VISTA SPACE detects movement using PIR technology and measures light levels from 0 to 5,000 lux. It does not measure CO2, temperature or humidity.

What is the range of the LoRaWAN motion sensor?

Detection extends up to 6 metres, with a 120° angle vertically and horizontally. Actual coverage depends on sensor placement and the characteristics of the area.

Does this occupancy sensor count people?

No. It detects motion without providing an exact occupant count. Detection of a stationary person is not guaranteed.

How can the LoRaWAN light sensor support lighting control?

Light readings and motion events can supply inputs to a compatible lighting system or BMS. That system defines the scenarios and controls the luminaires.

Is a gateway needed to view data remotely?

Yes. Remote monitoring requires compatible LoRaWAN infrastructure. Local L2D1 communication between compatible devices can operate without a gateway or LoRaWAN network.

What is the difference between VISTA SPACE and VISTA MOVE?

VISTA SPACE combines motion detection and light levels. VISTA MOVE adds temperature and humidity measurement to these functions.

How long does the VISTA SPACE battery last?

Up to 10 years using one replaceable CR123 lithium battery, depending on settings and operating conditions.
